WOODBURY — Mrs. Mary Ann (Del Buono) Casteel, age 61, died at her parents' home in Watertown on Aug. 4, 2012, surrounded by her loving husband, Thomas Casteel, loving son and daughter, her devoted parents and family.
Mary was born on Dec. 6, 1950, in Oklahoma City, Okla., daughter of John and Barbara Del Buono. Mary grew up in Waterbury and attended Mt. Carmel Grammar School and Catholic High and Kennedy High schools. She was a loving caregiver to her traumatically brain-injured brother, John Nicholas Del Buono, for 26 years. She became a paralegal working with her father, Attorney John Del Buono, for 22 years.
Mary loved to travel and enjoyed many wonderful vacations with her children and husband. She wanted to see the Seven Wonders of the World and the Northern Lights and is now getting a spectacular view of them from the other side. She especially liked the western part of the United States, the Grand Canyon and sunrises. Cactus plants adorned her home and office. She was an avid fan of The Moody Blues and attended many of their concerts with her husband, Tom, and her brother, Nick.
She excelled at cross-stitching and gave many beautiful gifts to her family and friends. She and her mother attended ceramic classes, making many beautiful works of art. One of her favorite pastimes was planning parties for every occasion for her children, grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Mary was a beloved parishioner and communicant at St. Teresa's Roman Catholic Church in Woodbury. She was an active parishioner and prepared the altar for the Vigil Mass each week. The Rev. Robert Kwiatkowski administered the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick to Mary before she died.
Mary is survived by her husband, Thomas Casteel of Woodbury; her son, Peter Casteel and wife Cindy of New Jersey; and her daughter, Amy Teresa Bailey and husband Stuart of California. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Jasmine and husband Chris Beach, Jordan, Alexandra, Gabriel and Isaiah Dean. Mary is also survived by her parents, John and Barbara Del Buono of Watertown; her brother, Joseph Del Buono of Plymouth; her five sisters, Joan McKnight of California, Susan Del Buono of Thomaston, Sally Houseknecht of Waterbury, Deborah Ellingsworth of Watertown and Catherine Jewett of Bloomfield; and most especially by her dear friend, Gail St. Mary of Southington and her sons, Zachary, Spencer and Brandon Duffany. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Patricia Mulcahy of Oakville and Mary Levis of New Jersey; and many nieces and nephews: Kristen Rucevice, Sierra Sumpf, Rachel Rodriguez, Kyle, Michael and Paul Houseknecht, Nicole Jasulovic, John James Del Buono, Christopher Jewett, Jason Frank; also Donna Merritt, David Mulcahy, Douglas Mulcahy, Debbie Lopez, Dawn Ferullo, Joseph, Tommy and Mark Levis; and 17 grandnieces and nephews. Her brother, John Nicholas Del Buono, and her nephew, Jason Sumpf, preceded her in death.
Mary's family would like to give special thanks to the Hospice caregivers who lovingly and gently attended her at her deathbed.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, Aug. 6, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Woodbury Funeral Home of Munson-Lovetere, 2 School St. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 7, at St. Teresa's Roman Catholic Church, Woodbury, at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Watertown.
