WATERBURY — John P. McDermott, 86, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 9, 2012, at Saint Mary's Hospital.
Mr. McDermott was born on Dec. 10, 1925, in Waterbury, a son of the late James W. McDermott and Catherine (McCarthy) McDermott. He was the owner and operator of Jack's Place (Garden Center) in Naugatuck. He was a WWII veteran having served in the U.S. Navy and has received the WWII Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal and Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon.
He is survived by four sons, Paul J. McDermott and his wife, Sina, of Naugatuck, Mark McDermott of Litchfield, Kevin J. McDermott of Waterbury and Christopher J. McDermott of Orlando, Fla.; a daughter, Diane Jacobs of Woodbury; and one brother, James L. McDermott of Sunset Beach, N.C. He also leaves nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and his former wife, Jean (Shopis) McDermott.
He was predeceased by his two sisters, Roseanne Gallagher and Helene Olsen, and two brothers, William and Andrew McDermott.
A memorial service will be held on Monday Aug. 13, 2012, at 5 p.m. at the Buckmiller Brothers Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Ave., Naugatuck. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
