OXFORD -- A 26-year-old New Jersey man died while swimming in Lake Zoar Friday night, state police said. The man was swimming with friends in the Jackson Cove Park area of the lake when he disappeared, said Fire Chief Scott Pelletier. His friends reported him missing at 8:22 p.m., Pelletier said. Several fire departments, state police and the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection responded to assist with the search for the missing swimmer. At about 9:30 p.m., dive teams from Seymour and the Newtown Underwater Search and Rescue Team found the man's body under water near a dock at the Jackson Cove Park swimming area, Pelletier said. He was dead at the scene. State police and the Office of the State Medical Examiner are investigating the cause of the swimmer's death. Oxford Resident Trooper Sgt. Daniel Semosky said there were no signs of foul play, but police are still investigating the sequence of events leading up to his death. State police didn't release the man's name Saturday pending notification of his family.
