WOODBURY -- A truck carrying loam has gone into the Nonnewaug River off Main Street North, and is on its side in the river. The accident is just south of Mill Road, between Mill and Minortown roads. Main Street North (Route 6) is closed in that area, and motorists are being detoured around the accident. Police report the driver, who has not been identified, suffered minor injures in the crash, which occurred around 11 a.m. Southbury sent an ambulance to the scene to help Woodbury. The driver was taken to Waterbury Hospital as a precaution. The driver told police he swerved to avoid an animal. The dump truck, owned by Newtown Pools, is on its passenger side in the river. Fire Chief Janet Morgan said the truck was carrying loam, a mixture of sand, silt and clay. Workers were seen in the dump bed shoveling the load into the river. A wrecker is on scene, and after the material has been off-loaded workers will attempt to pull the truck out. The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection has sent representatives to the scene because the truck spilled fuel into the river, which feeds the Pomperaug River. Firefighters put three booms across the waterway to minimize the impact on the environment. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. Check back with rep-am.com for more updates on this story.
