WATERTOWN — Tyler Whitley is returning to his second home.
Whitley, a 2004 Taft School graduate and three-sport varsity captain, will succeed Taft head football coach Panos Voulgaris.
Voulgaris has accepted a position at Episcopal High in Alexandria, Va., where he will serve as head football coach and work in admissions. Voulgaris led Taft to an 8-0 record and the Norm Walker Bowl Class A New England title last season.
"It's a dream come true," said Whitley, a Torrington native, of his return to Taft.
Whitley was a four-year player at safety for the Wesleyan University football team and graduated in 2008. He earned a spot on the New England Small College Athletic Conference All-Academic team as a senior and was a Cardinal Club Scholar-Athlete Award winner for having the highest grade-point average on the team.
He also studied abroad in Rome for a semester. After earning his bachelor's degree in government with a certificate in international relations, he joined the Salisbury School Learning Center and coached basketball and football there.
After two years at Salisbury, he became a graduate assistant with the Sacred Heart University football team, coaching the the running backs, managing the scout defense and special teams, and handling recruiting.
